Small Grants Help Shropshire Businesses Add Jobs

A furniture maker in Shrewsbury turned wood waste into a profitable heating product and hired a new employee, all thanks to a £10,000 grant that bought three pieces of equipment.

Anthony Lewis Ltd used funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to purchase a mitre guillotine, briquette machine, and bandsaw. The upgrades cut manufacturing time for their handmade kitchens while creating an entirely new revenue stream from recycled wood shavings.

Owner Anthony Dargue says the grant made real and positive changes possible for his business. It's one of dozens of success stories emerging from Shropshire's Small Equipment Grant Scheme, which provided between £2,000 and £10,000 to local companies.

Caviar & Cocktails in Shrewsbury used their grant to fuel impressive growth. The business launched 17 new products and expanded to almost 30 total options through creative gift combinations.

That expansion created jobs in sales, marketing, and leadership roles. Owner Alison McKenzie credits the grant for enabling the staffing increase through strong business growth.

The tourism sector saw benefits too. The Spinney Luxury Glamping near Bishop's Castle invested their grant in a new glamping unit that now welcomes more visitors.

The business created both full-time and part-time positions since opening in August 2024. Owner Scott Higgins says they're already planning to add a fifth lodge this autumn to meet growing demand.

The Ripple Effect

The success of these small grants demonstrates how strategic investment in rural businesses creates momentum far beyond the initial funding. A briquette machine doesn't just speed up production; it creates sustainable heating products and jobs that support families.

A glamping unit doesn't just house tourists; it brings visitor spending to rural communities and creates employment opportunities where they're often scarce. When nearly 30 Shropshire businesses received these grants, the collective impact multiplied across the local economy.

Councillor Alex Wagner, who oversees economic growth for Shropshire Council, notes the results speak for themselves. Relatively small grants helped companies create jobs, launch products, and invest for the future.

The challenge now is that this particular funding stream has ended without replacement. Wagner emphasizes that continued investment in rural economies is essential to help more businesses achieve similar success.

The program distributed almost £2.9 million between 2023 and 2026 through the Rural England Prosperity Fund. These success stories prove the model works when rural businesses get practical support to grow.
