Smartwatch Crash Alert Prevents Wildfire in Oregon

When a car tumbled down a hillside in South Eugene and struck a leaking propane tank near wildfire country, a smartwatch became the difference between a rescue and a potential catastrophe.

The driver's smartwatch detected the crash and automatically alerted 911 dispatchers on June 11, just before 3 p.m. Eugene Springfield Fire crews arrived to find the vehicle overturned on a steep embankment along a rural driveway, with the driver trapped upside down inside.

The scene presented a perfect storm of dangers. The damaged propane tank was actively leaking, high voltage power lines hung overhead, and the location sat in an area with elevated wildfire risk during dry conditions.

Five fire crews, one medic unit, and two chief officers worked together to stabilize the patient while managing each threat. After a lengthy extrication process, firefighters freed the sole occupant and transported them to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Eugene Springfield Fire Chief Mike Caven called the incident unusual for combining so many challenging factors at once. The crash site was difficult to find and access, making the automatic alert even more critical for a fast response.
