Solar and Storage Hit 91% of New US Grid Capacity in Q1

America's energy transformation just hit a milestone that seemed impossible a decade ago: clean energy sources are now dominating how we power our homes and businesses.

Solar panels and battery storage systems combined to provide 91% of all new electricity generation capacity added to the US grid in the first quarter of 2026. That's the highest quarterly share these technologies have ever achieved together.

The progress didn't stop there. In May 2026, monthly electricity generation from solar exceeded coal for the first time in American history. Just ten years ago, solar represented almost nothing in our national energy mix. Today, it supplies 13% of all electricity used across the country.

California and Texas led the charge with record-breaking performances throughout the spring and summer. On July 9, California's battery storage systems discharged nearly 13 gigawatts of power during evening hours, covering 36% of the entire region's electricity needs when demand typically peaks after sunset.

The next day, California's solar panels generated 23 gigawatts of electricity, meeting 72% of afternoon demand. That marked the third time the state broke its own solar generation record since June began.

Texas also celebrated multiple milestones. On March 14, renewable energy sources met 79% of the state's total electricity demand for the day. By July 9, Texas solar farms peaked at over 35 gigawatts, cementing the state's position as America's fastest growing solar market.

Battery storage proved its worth in Texas too. On March 13, storage systems supplied 20% of evening electricity demand, helping keep lights on during critical hours.

The Ripple Effect

The clean energy revolution isn't limited to sunny California and Texas. Major power grid operators across the Midwest and Northeast all set their own solar generation records over the past three months. From New England to the Southwest, renewable energy systems stepped up precisely when electricity demand hit seasonal highs.

These milestones demonstrate how solar and storage have evolved from experimental technologies into essential components of America's power infrastructure. Competitive costs and rapid installation timelines are making clean energy the practical choice for grid operators nationwide.
