Solar Shutters Now Generate Power While Shading Your Windows

Imagine if your window blinds could pay you back by making electricity while keeping your house cool.

That's exactly what German manufacturer Ehret created with SolarSlide, a sliding shutter system that does double duty as a solar panel. Developed with help from research institute Fraunhofer ISE, the product launched in France this January and transforms building facades into power generators.

Each square meter panel contains 25 solar cells that produce about 142 watts of electricity. When slid across windows, the shutters filter harsh sunlight to reduce cooling costs in summer while still letting natural light through. The setup works on a rail system that fits large window openings in homes or office buildings.

Ehret offers two versions for different needs. The standard SolarSlide connects to external inverters and battery storage for medium sized projects. SolarSlide Pro includes a built in microinverter that plugs straight into regular wall outlets, making it perfect for homeowners doing renovations.

The panels use colored glass construction that hides the solar cells, giving architects design flexibility. The system mounts on aluminum rails based on Ehret's existing window frame technology, so installation works with both new construction and building upgrades.

The Ripple Effect

This technology addresses two building challenges at once. Traditional window shading saves energy by blocking heat, but it's a passive solution. Solar shading systems like SolarSlide actively generate power while doing the same job, turning every sun facing window into potential income.

The building integrated solar market keeps growing as cities push for cleaner energy. Facade mounted systems make sense in urban areas where rooftop space is limited or already occupied. Every sliding shutter becomes a mini power plant that contributes to the building's energy needs.
