SoundCloud Acquires Nina Protocol, Saves Artists' Work

When Nina Protocol closed its doors in May after struggling to stay afloat, independent musicians lost more than just a platform. They lost a space that celebrated underground artists and let them keep 100% of their sales revenue.

Now SoundCloud is bringing that mission back to life. The streaming giant announced it acquired Nina Protocol, preserving the platform's music journalism archive, artist features, and cultural commentary that documented emerging music scenes.

Founded in 2021 by three independent musicians, Nina Protocol offered artists something rare: digital storefronts they controlled completely. Built on blockchain technology, it enabled direct sales to fans without traditional streaming middlemen taking a cut.

The platform couldn't establish a sustainable business model on its own. But SoundCloud CEO Eliah Seton sees value in what Nina built by putting artists and communities first.

"Our priority is to honor what they've created, while carrying that mission forward," Seton said. The company promises to use Nina's editorial work to help surface emerging artists and music scenes to more listeners.

The Ripple Effect

This marks more than just saving an archive. Artists who built audiences on Nina Protocol are getting migration tools to transfer their work to SoundCloud, along with free Artist subscriptions through year's end.

Those subscriptions include monetization features and audience growth tools, giving independent musicians resources to build sustainable careers. For artists who invested time building on Nina, it's a lifeline instead of starting from scratch.

SoundCloud's move signals growing recognition that independent artists need platforms designed around their needs, not just major label priorities. By preserving Nina's editorial voice and artist-first approach, the acquisition could influence how SoundCloud serves its creator community.

The deal is SoundCloud's first acquisition since purchasing AI music company Musiio in 2022. Together, these moves show the platform expanding beyond simple music hosting into comprehensive support for independent careers.
