South African Universities Expand Student Success Goals

✨ Faith Restored

Twenty South African universities are redefining student success to include not just graduation, but real employment and economic mobility. The Siyaphumelela Network now supports 80% of the country's public university students with this broader vision.

South Africa's public universities are proving that getting students to graduation is just the beginning of real success.

Through the Siyaphumelela Network, 20 of South Africa's 26 public universities are now working together to ensure students don't just earn degrees but also find meaningful employment and economic opportunity. The initiative, which means "we succeed" in Zulu, has grown from supporting just five universities in 2014 to reaching 80% of public university students today.

The shift comes at a crucial time. While graduates still fare better than those without degrees, recent data shows 12.2% of South African graduates remain unemployed. The competition is fierce, with an average of 116 applications per job opening and only 12% of applicants making it to a first interview.

"Meaningful student success starts with access, but does not end at graduation," said Innocent Nkata, CEO of Saide, the organization leading the network. "It must open the door to opportunity, including employment, entrepreneurship, economic mobility and meaningful participation in society."

The numbers show the challenge is real but solvable. Research presented at the recent Siyaphumelela Conference revealed that only about 11% of 2022 graduates from disadvantaged backgrounds entered fields with strong employment prospects and high earning potential. Many students complete their degrees but choose pathways with limited job opportunities.

Universities in the network are already making measurable progress. The University of the Free State has narrowed the achievement gap between black and white students at the course level by more than 55% through better support systems and institutional alignment.

The Kresge Foundation has invested an estimated R338 million over 14 years to support this work. That investment is helping universities use data to make smarter decisions about student support, from enrollment through career placement.

The Ripple Effect

This expanded view of student success is transforming how South Africa thinks about higher education's role in society. More than 450 delegates from universities, government, employers, NGOs and student groups gathered at the 2026 conference to share strategies and solutions.

By connecting what students study to actual job markets and economic needs, universities are building stronger bridges between education and opportunity. When disadvantaged students not only graduate but also secure good jobs, entire families and communities benefit from that economic mobility.

Together, these universities are proving that student success means nothing less than opening real doors to South Africa's future.
