SpaceX Welder's $10K Stock Grant Now Worth Over $1 Million

When Juan Hernandez accepted a welding job at SpaceX in 2015, he had never even heard of the company. The $10,000 in stock they offered him seemed like a nice bonus, but nothing life-changing.

Last Friday, everything changed. SpaceX's $75 billion IPO turned Hernandez's 6,500 shares into $1,046,175 when the stock closed at $160.95 on its first day of trading.

Hernandez spent a decade at SpaceX building the structures that lifted rockets onto launch pads and held them in place for takeoff. He eventually worked his way up from welder to supervisor, watching the company grow from an ambitious startup into a space industry giant.

A friend who worked at SpaceX recommended Hernandez for the welding position. "I thought in my head, I don't know what SpaceX is, but let's go," Hernandez told CBS News in an exclusive interview.

At the time, stock compensation was completely foreign to him. His previous hourly jobs had never offered equity. "It wasn't a big deal. I didn't know anything about it then," he said.

Hernandez now works at Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos's rocket company, but his SpaceX shares continued to vest. The timing of the IPO turned out to be perfect for the father of three.

Why This Inspires

Despite his newfound wealth, Hernandez says he plans to keep working. As an immigrant, he learned early that hard work matters more than money, and that's a lesson he won't forget.

He's already passing on his financial knowledge to his three children, ages 6, 10, and 16. His teenage daughter has become a young investor herself, with stakes in Meta and several other companies. "She's a little entrepreneur herself," Hernandez said proudly.

Hernandez credits the stock program with motivating employees to give their best effort. "They will perform a lot better because, I mean, it is, it's their company as well," he explained.

If he could speak to Elon Musk today, Hernandez knows exactly what he'd say: thank you for making dreams possible for regular workers. "He made it a possibility for somebody like us, you know, the cook or electrician," Hernandez said. "He's making all these lives much better and meaningful for their families as well."

The welder who took a chance on an unknown company just proved that betting on yourself can pay off in ways you never imagined.
