Spain Gets Smarter EV Chargers That Share Power

Electric vehicle drivers at a Spanish marina can now charge faster thanks to technology that thinks like a smart thermostat for cars.

Wallbox just activated its first public Supernova PowerRing charging stations at Port de Sitges, a busy marina near Barcelona. The three chargers share a 240 kW power pool instead of each hogging a fixed amount of electricity.

Here's why that matters. Traditional charging stations pull the same amount of power whether a car is plugged in or not, wasting energy and requiring expensive grid upgrades. PowerRing automatically adjusts based on how many cars need juice and how fast they can charge.

If one EV pulls up alone, it can grab the full 240 kW for a rapid charge. When three cars arrive together, the system divides the power fairly among them. No electricity sits idle, and no driver waits longer than necessary.

The real magic happens at scale. Wallbox designed PowerRing to eventually handle up to 720 kW of shared capacity and deliver 400 kW to a single vehicle if the car can accept that speed.

This approach solves a major headache for charging operators in cities where space is tight and power grids are already stretched. Instead of building oversized infrastructure for peak demand that sits empty most hours, operators can squeeze more performance from existing connections.

The Ripple Effect

Smart power sharing could accelerate EV adoption in places where traditional charging infrastructure would be too expensive or impossible to build. Marinas, apartment complexes, and city centers often struggle with limited electrical capacity.

By making efficient use of what's already available, systems like PowerRing lower the cost barrier for installing fast chargers. That means more charging stations in more places, which directly addresses range anxiety, one of the biggest concerns keeping people from switching to electric vehicles.

Eduard Castañeda, Wallbox's co-founder and chief product officer, called the Sitges installation an important milestone that demonstrates how the technology helps operators deploy charging infrastructure more efficiently.

Wallbox plans to roll out Supernova PowerRing stations across Europe as part of its expanding public charging network.
