Spain Now Has 262 Clean Energy Communities Running

Spain is proving that the energy transition works best when communities lead the way.

The country now has 262 active energy communities, local projects where neighbors, cooperatives, and municipalities team up to generate their own clean power and share the benefits. These aren't corporate developments. They're grassroots efforts driven by more than 111,000 ordinary people taking control of their energy future.

Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition just added 20 new projects to the roster, backed by $127.5 million in EU funding. The government is also preparing to launch a second round of support for advisory offices that help communities navigate the technical challenges of getting started.

The numbers tell a story of real impact. Together, these 262 communities have installed 175 megawatts of solar panels that generate enough electricity annually to power tens of thousands of homes. They've also set up 420 electric vehicle charging stations and deployed 45 electric vehicles, making clean transportation accessible at the neighborhood level.

Catalonia leads the movement with 72 active projects, followed by Castilla y León with 40 and Andalusia with 34. But the energy is spreading everywhere, from the Basque Country to the Canary Islands, with even the smallest regions getting involved.

What makes these communities special is how they combine solutions. Most focus on rooftop solar paired with battery storage so families can use their own clean power day and night. Many include energy efficiency upgrades that cut waste and lower bills. Others tackle heating with renewable systems or help neighbors charge electric cars affordably.

The Ripple Effect: When communities control their own energy, the benefits multiply beyond just cleaner power. Local jobs get created installing and maintaining systems. Energy costs stay within the community instead of flowing to distant utilities. People learn new skills and build stronger connections with neighbors working toward shared goals. For rural areas especially, these projects bring investment and opportunity that might otherwise pass them by.
