Prototype modular tire being tested on rolling test equipment at Spanish university laboratory

Spanish Scientists Create Tire with Swappable Tread

Mind Blown

A new modular tire design lets you swap out the tread instead of junking the whole tire, making recycling 80% easier. The innovation could slash microplastics pollution from roads while extending tire life.

Spanish scientists just solved one of recycling's toughest problems with a tire that never has to die completely.

Researchers at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid developed the Ecotire, a modular tire where you can pop off the worn tread and snap on a new one. When the tread finally gives out, you're only recycling 20% of the tire instead of tossing the whole thing into a shredder.

Traditional tire recycling is a nightmare. Workers must separate steel belts and bead cores from rubber treads, a process so labor intensive that many tires end up in landfills instead. The ones that do get recycled become playground surfaces, running tracks, or industrial fuel.

The Ecotire sidesteps all that hassle. Its silicone tread detaches mechanically from the sidewalls and casing, creating a simple ring that recycles easily. Lead scientist Daniel García-Pozuelo and his team chose silicone because their research shows it lasts ten times longer than conventional tire rubber.

The design tackles another major problem: microplastics. Right now, conventional tires shed tiny rubber particles constantly as they roll down roads, creating one of the biggest sources of microplastics pollution worldwide. With Ecotire, only the silicone tread touches pavement, so the rest of the tire can use polymers that don't break down into harmful particles.

The prototype passed its first major test on a rolling rig that simulated real driving conditions. Researchers adjusted load, slip angle, inflation pressure, and other variables to see how it performed. Road tests with industry partners could start soon.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond easier recycling, this innovation opens doors for smarter tires. The silicone tread can accommodate electronic sensors, paving the way for tires that monitor their own condition and alert drivers to problems before they become dangerous.

The environmental math is striking. If millions of drivers only replaced treads instead of entire tires, recycling facilities would process a fraction of the material they handle now. Landfills would see fewer dumped tires. Roads would shed fewer microplastics into soil and waterways.

García-Pozuelo says the tire already performs close enough to conventional models that industry partnerships are within reach. There's still work ahead before the Ecotire rolls into your local shop, but the prototype proves the concept works.

Sometimes the best innovations don't reinvent the wheel, they just make it last longer.
