Spanish Village Gets High-Tech Museum for Local Heritage

Visitors climbing the 241 steps to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe can now experience the journey without leaving the museum floor, thanks to a new tech-powered cultural space in Bermeo, Spain.

The Basque fishing village partnered with Telefónica to create a museum that brings local history to life through touchscreens, laser projectors, and immersive 360-degree experiences. Located near the town hall, the space showcases Bermeo's maritime heritage, festivals, and natural wonders through interactive timelines and audiovisual displays.

One standout feature lets visitors virtually climb to the famous San Juan de Gaztelugatxe hermitage through a fully immersive 360-degree tour. They can navigate freely, touch to interact, and listen to narrated stories with ambient sounds that transport them to the windswept clifftop.

The "Kings, Pirates, Pilgrims and Influencers" exhibit takes guests through centuries of local history with images and stories available in four languages: Basque, Spanish, English, and French. Another section features subtitled videos highlighting maritime traditions, the coastal environment, and beloved celebrations like San Juan and San Ignacio.
