Sri Lanka Breaks Ground on 50MW Wind Farm in Mannar

Sri Lanka just took a major step toward a cleaner energy future as the country's President presided over the launch of a 50-megawatt wind farm in the northern Mannar region. The project will generate enough electricity to power roughly 100,000 homes annually starting in March 2027.

Global green technology leader Envision Energy is supplying 10 massive wind turbines for the project, each standing 110 meters tall to capture Mannar's strong and consistent coastal winds. This marks the company's first utility-scale wind project in Sri Lanka, bringing proven technology to a country eager to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The wind farm is being developed by HayWind One Limited, part of Sri Lanka's leading Hayleys conglomerate. The company chose Envision's turbines specifically for their ability to withstand the region's salty, humid coastal environment with enhanced anti-corrosion features designed for longevity.

Local leaders emphasize that this isn't just about environmental goals. It's about making electricity more affordable for everyday Sri Lankans. By generating power from the wind instead of importing fuel, the project aims to bring down energy costs for families across the country.

The technical specs are impressive too. The turbines will produce approximately 207 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity each year, offsetting significant carbon emissions. Envision Energy will provide maintenance services throughout the project's 20-year lifespan to ensure consistent performance.

Hayleys mobilized its most experienced Sri Lankan engineers and project managers to handle the complex installation, demonstrating that homegrown talent can deliver renewable energy infrastructure at a global standard.
