Stranger Sends Gift to Elderly Woman Robbed in York

A stranger who read about an elderly woman's traumatic robbery in York has sent her a care package to restore her faith in humanity.

The anonymous man, a former York resident, contacted The Press newspaper with a gift for the 84-year-old woman who was knocked to the ground and robbed outside M&S in York City Centre last July. The box contains a replacement handbag, chocolates, and money for a bouquet of flowers.

His motivation hits close to home. A loved one experienced a similar crime, and when he read about the York victim's story, he felt compelled to help.

"I don't want anything in return or to share my name," he told The Press. "I just wanted to show her that there's people out there who care."

The original crime left lasting wounds. Daniel Bell, the attacker, stole the woman's purse and caused injuries to her head and shoulder. She had recently undergone surgery before the robbery happened.

The attack shook her sense of security. "You hear about these things happening in big cities like London, but not really in York," she told the court. "I'm a bit more apprehensive about going out now."

Bell was sentenced to three years and four months in prison after pleading guilty to robbery and additional theft charges. Police identified him through CCTV footage and a public appeal.
