Subaru's New EV Gets 288-Mile Range for Under $40K

Electric vehicles are getting better and more affordable at the same time, proving you don't need to break the bank for clean transportation.

Subaru just announced the 2027 Solterra will arrive at dealerships this fall with the same starting price as last year's model, even though the electric SUV got a complete overhaul. The base Premium trim costs $38,495, while the top Touring XT model rings in at $45,855.

The improvements are substantial. Every trim now travels up to 288 miles on a single charge, a huge jump from the 2025 model's 227 miles. That extra 61 miles means fewer charging stops on road trips and more flexibility for daily driving.

Performance got a boost too. The upgraded XT trims pack 338 horsepower and rocket from zero to 60 mph in about five seconds. Even the standard models deliver solid acceleration with 233 horsepower from dual electric motors.

Perhaps the biggest upgrade is what you can't see. Every 2027 Solterra comes with a built-in port that works with Tesla's Supercharger network, unlocking access to over 25,000 charging stations across North America. A new battery preconditioning system helps the SUV charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes, even in cold weather.

Inside, drivers get a 14-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Subaru's EyeSight safety technology comes standard, offering features like automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance.

The electric SUV also delivers on Subaru's outdoorsy reputation with 8.3 inches of ground clearance, which the company says is best in class for electric vehicles.

The Bright Side

This announcement shows the electric vehicle market is maturing in exactly the right way. As technology improves and production scales up, automakers can add features without raising prices. The 2027 Solterra proves that going electric doesn't mean choosing between capability and affordability.

Buyers can choose from four trim levels and six exterior colors when the Solterra arrives this fall. The electric SUV joins Subaru's growing lineup that now includes the Uncharted and Trailseeker models, giving eco-conscious drivers more options than ever.
