Sweden Builds 189 MW Wind Farm to Power 110,000 Homes

A new wind farm breaking ground in central Sweden will soon deliver reliable clean energy to over 100,000 homes, marking a major step forward in the country's renewable energy future.

Developer OX2 has launched construction on the 189 megawatt Fageråsen wind farm in Malung-Sälen, a forested region in Dalarna known for its brutal winter conditions. Unlike their usual practice of selling completed projects, OX2 is keeping this one, signaling strong confidence in Sweden's renewable energy market.

The farm will feature 27 cutting-edge turbines standing 119 meters tall, each equipped with special anti-icing systems built specifically for the harsh climate. These heating elements prevent dangerous ice buildup on the massive blades, keeping the turbines spinning safely through freezing winters when energy demand peaks for home heating.

What makes this project especially smart is its planned 200 megawatt-hour battery system. The batteries will store excess wind energy and release it during high-demand periods, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges: keeping the lights on when the wind isn't blowing.

Construction crews are already upgrading forest roads and pouring foundations across the site. Turbine installation begins in 2027, with the full facility expected to start generating power by early 2028.

The Ripple Effect

Once operational, Fageråsen will pump 550 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity into Sweden's central grid annually, directly serving the Stockholm region where energy shortages have been a persistent problem. By producing power close to where people actually need it, the project reduces strain on transmission lines and improves grid stability.

The wind farm represents more than just clean energy. It's creating construction jobs now and will provide steady employment for maintenance crews for decades under a 25-year service agreement. Local communities benefit from a more resilient power supply, while Sweden moves closer to its ambitious climate goals without relying on imported energy.

This follows the recent completion of another major Swedish wind project, the 260 MW Stor-Skälsjön facility, which now powers 160,000 homes. Together, these projects show how Nordic countries are turning their challenging climates into renewable energy advantages rather than obstacles.

By 2028, families across central Sweden will be heating their homes and living their daily lives powered by clean wind energy designed to thrive in the very conditions that make their winters so demanding.
