Telangana Mandates QR Code Safety Stickers for Trucks

Nighttime highway accidents in India are about to get a powerful new opponent, and it comes in the form of a simple sticker.

Telangana's Transport Department announced Thursday that all transport vehicles must install QR code-enabled reflective tapes and rear marking plates starting February 20. The move targets a critical safety gap: vehicles that become nearly invisible on dark highways and poorly lit roads.

The new system makes safety foolproof. Each reflective tape carries a Transport Department hologram, unique serial number, and QR code that enforcement officers can scan instantly to verify authenticity. No more cheap knockoffs that fail when drivers need them most.

Only five carefully vetted manufacturers can supply these lifesaving stickers: Orafol India, 3M India, Glodian Reflective, Daoming Reflective Material India, and Avery Dennison India. The strict approval process ensures every sticker meets rigorous quality standards.

Vehicle owners receive an official Affixation Certificate complete with vehicle details, photographs, and a two-year warranty. The department has locked in fixed prices for different sticker categories, and any dealer caught overcharging faces immediate removal from the program and loss of their bank guarantees.

The enforcement mechanism has real teeth. Vehicles that skip the upgrade won't receive fitness certificates until they comply with QR verification. The department built in a three-month grace period for vehicles with newly installed tapes, giving owners time to adjust.

This policy does more than protect individual drivers. When transport vehicles become clearly visible at night, everyone on the road benefits. Families traveling home after dark, late-shift workers commuting on motorcycles, and pedestrians in rural areas all gain an extra layer of safety.
