Texas Library's Mahjong Night Builds Community Connection

The Mt. Enterprise Library transformed into a vibrant gathering space on June 11 when dozens of residents showed up for a free Mahjong Night that had laughter echoing off the walls. The evening proved that sometimes the best way to bring a community together is through the simple joy of learning something new.

Angie Phillips, a first-grade teacher at Mt. Enterprise ISD, led the evening alongside co-host Tannah Hughes. They guided players of all experience levels through the centuries-old tile-based game, helping beginners build their first winning hands while experienced players sharpened their skills.

The event was part of the library's 2026 Adult Summer Reading Program, which runs through July. Participants can join a friendly competition with a brand-new Mahjong set as the grand prize, turning summer reading into a social experience that extends beyond the pages.

Everyone went home with something extra. Donated raffle prizes included restaurant coupons and free books, many made possible by a Dollar General Literacy Grant awarded to the Friends of the Mt. Enterprise Library in May. The grant is helping provide reading materials throughout the summer for community members.

This story shows how libraries are reimagining themselves as community centers where connection happens naturally. By pairing an engaging activity with their literacy mission, Mt. Enterprise Library created a space where people who might never have met became friends over tiles and strategy.

The evening also highlights how small investments in community programming create outsized returns. A literacy grant didn't just buy books; it funded an experience that brought neighbors together and reminded everyone that learning is more fun when it's shared.
