Texas Teen Wins $2,500 Scholarship, Mentors 6 to Victory
A Texas high school senior who trained on everything from classic cars to heavy equipment just won a national automotive scholarship. Even better: she mentored six classmates who also placed in a national competition.
Xen Reddell knows what it feels like to turn passion into purpose, and now she's helping others do the same.
The Canyon High School senior from New Braunfels, Texas, just received the $2,500 Fueling the Future scholarship for her work in the automotive industry. But what really sets her apart is how she's already lifting others up alongside her own success.
Reddell competed twice in the Universal Technical Institute Top Tech Challenge, a national automotive competition. She placed first on her second attempt, proving that persistence pays off.
Then she did something even more impressive. She trained six fellow students who went on to place in the same competition.
"I consider myself blessed to have a career path I am passionate about with a clear path to success," Reddell said. Her hands-on experience ranges from restoring classic cars to operating heavy equipment, giving her a versatile skill set most professionals take years to develop.

The scholarship came from Modern Industry eXpertise (MiX) and the Young Auto Care Network Group, funded by a creative National Coffee Day campaign. Industry supporters skipped their daily coffee last September and donated the cost instead, reaching their goal of 50 recurring donors.
The Ripple Effect
Reddell's story matters beyond one scholarship. As a young woman entering vehicle service, she's breaking down barriers in a male-dominated field while showing others the doors are wide open.
Elisse Richardson from MiX called Reddell's journey a perfect example of "determination, resilience, and confidence" that inspires others to explore automotive careers. Tanya Hunt from YANG praised her commitment to "learning, mentoring her peers, and giving back."
The scholarship program awarded over $900,000 to automotive students for the 2026-27 academic year. Students can access hundreds of opportunities from 40 different organizations through one simple application.
Reddell plans to build a strong reputation as a technician while continuing to mentor the next wave of automotive professionals, proving that success is sweeter when you bring others along for the ride.
