Thailand Allocates $100M to Fight Floods and Drought

Thailand just approved a major investment in disaster preparedness that could protect millions of people from both floods and drought.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul greenlit emergency funding totaling hundreds of millions of baht for deputy prime ministers to tackle water-related crises across the nation. Each leader received 100 million baht to respond to current flooding while preparing communities for possible drought conditions early next year.

The timing couldn't be more critical. Heavy rains are currently affecting several regions, with the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department issuing emergency alerts for areas around the Lao River in Chiang Rai and Phayao. Water levels in the Mekong River are rising, prompting close monitoring across the Northeast.

But here's where it gets smart. Instead of just reacting to today's floods, officials are thinking ahead. The government instructed teams to identify areas where current rainwater can be stored for use during potential drought conditions expected in early 2027.

The Royal Irrigation Department reports that major reservoirs currently hold about 44.84 billion cubic meters of water, at 58% capacity. That leaves more than 31 billion cubic meters of available storage space to capture and save this season's rainfall.

The Bright Side

This dual approach transforms a crisis into opportunity. Communities facing flood warnings today could benefit from that same water months from now when drought threatens crops and drinking supplies.

Provincial governors received instructions to coordinate with local agencies and communities, using multiple warning systems including cell broadcasts, village announcement systems, and community leaders. Residents in 12 high-risk provinces have clear evacuation plans ready.

Agriculture Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit ordered machinery, water pumps, and personnel to stand ready for immediate deployment. The preparation has been so thorough that flood response in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district has been rehearsed multiple times.
