Thailand Cracks Down on Fake Birth Certificates

When a small-town mayor in Thailand noticed something suspicious in birth registration records, he didn't look away. His decision to speak up just dismantled a major identity fraud operation.

Kittipong Pongsurawet, mayor of Pho Klang municipality in Nakhon Ratchasima province, became the first official to raise the alarm about questionable birth certificates. His concerns triggered investigations that revealed civil servants had been illegally issuing Thai birth certificates to foreign nationals.

Thanks to his vigilance, authorities have now revoked 50 fake registrations. The Department of Provincial Administration confirmed the cancellations on Tuesday, marking a significant victory in protecting Thailand's civil registration system.

The investigation revealed that some civil servants had been working with Chinese nationals to secure fake Thai birth certificates for children. Army officials cross-checked registration lists against hospital databases and found no actual birth records for the children in question.

Three civil servants in Nakhon Ratchasima were arrested on Saturday for allegedly issuing fraudulent certificates. Similar cases have surfaced in Bangkok, where six more suspects were detained, including a district official.

Those affected by the revocations can appeal within 15 days if they can prove legitimate identity and residence. The process ensures genuine cases aren't caught in the dragnet while preventing further misuse of Thai documents.
