Thailand Launches Smart Factory Program for 5,700 Businesses

Thailand is betting big on smart technology to help its small manufacturers compete globally without leaving workers behind.

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and the National Science and Technology Development Agency signed a partnership to bring artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation to over 5,700 factories across the country. The collaboration focuses on helping small and medium businesses transform into Smart Factories while preparing workers for technology-driven jobs.

Governor Sumet Tangprasert explained that modern manufacturing now depends on automation and AI to boost efficiency and cut costs. The program connects small Thai businesses with major corporations in automotive, electronics, and food processing sectors to share knowledge and build stronger supply chains.

The IEAT Academy serves as the training hub, teaching workers new skills to operate advanced technologies. The program bridges the gap between research institutions, businesses, and government to ensure no one gets left behind as factories modernize.

Professor Chookiat Limpichamnong said the partnership brings cutting edge research directly to factory floors, supporting Thailand's push toward a Bio-Circular-Green economy. Five national research centers will provide expertise, infrastructure, and technical support to help businesses adopt new technologies affordably.

The initiative launches in four pilot industrial estates around Bangkok and key manufacturing zones. Teams will consult with factory owners to match them with the right technologies and training programs before expanding nationwide.

Thailand's smart factory push extends beyond manufacturing. The government is applying the same innovation-first approach to construction, launching a nationwide network of automated concrete testing laboratories with digital quality monitoring.

Ready-mixed concrete powers most of Thailand's infrastructure projects, and smart testing ensures consistent quality across the country. The new system connects labs, experts, and regulators through one digital platform, catching problems faster and building safer structures.

These coordinated efforts show how technology adoption can lift entire industries when paired with workforce investment. Small manufacturers gain access to tools once available only to giant corporations, while workers learn skills that make them more valuable, not replaceable.

The program demonstrates that automation doesn't have to eliminate jobs when governments plan thoughtfully. Thailand chose to invest in both technology and people, creating a model other developing nations are watching closely.
