Three Students, Three Milestones on First Day Back

June Hopkins gripped her new backpack and marched through Ridgeview Elementary like she owned the place, ready to conquer kindergarten one crayon at a time.

The five-year-old from Sparta, Michigan was pure excitement on Monday morning, barely pausing to hug her mom before claiming her desk in the back corner. "I'm gonna play a little bit, and read some books, and color!" she announced, her agenda crystal clear.

June was one of three Sparta Area Schools students navigating milestone moments on the first day back. While she charged ahead fearlessly, her counterparts experienced the mixed emotions that come with growing up.

Sixth-grader Sydney Zielinski stood in her new school, Sparta Middle School, taking in the reality of two full floors and changing classrooms. "I'm nervous and excited, because it's new, and it's a bigger school," she admitted. But her nerves didn't dim her enthusiasm for accelerated math and maybe trying out for volleyball next year.

Meanwhile, senior Brayley May walked the halls of Sparta High School knowing it was her last first day. She's eyeing Hope College or Grand Valley State University for elementary education, inspired by her kindergarten teacher mom.

"I've made so many memories here, and I'm just so excited to make new ones," Brayley said. But she's also mourning what she's leaving behind: familiar faces she's known her whole life, Homecoming dances, and her beloved Student Leadership Community role.

Brayley's advice for nervous students like Sydney carries the wisdom of someone who's been there. "Just take it day by day and it'll all work out," she said, remembering her own scary first day of middle school.

For younger kids like June, Brayley offered simpler guidance: get involved and try new things. The memories make it worth it.

June's mom Lindsey stood outside the classroom feeling "a little bittersweet" but mostly hopeful. Her daughter had spent the whole weekend asking when Monday would finally arrive. Now that it's here, Lindsey's wish is simple: "I hope that she gets to make some new friends, and that she's kind and brave and learns new things."

Three students, three chapters, one shared truth: every first day holds possibility.
