TikTok Video Leads Scientists to New Underground Fish Species

A social media video just opened the door to an entirely new form of life hiding beneath the feet of millions of people in northern India.

Scientists have identified a brand new genus and species of fish living in the underground water systems beneath Bihar, India. The discovery began when someone posted a TikTok video in 2024 showing a tiny, pale fish emerging from a hand-operated water pump near the India-Nepal border.

The fish looked so unusual that researchers immediately recognized something special. No underground fish species had ever been documented in this region, despite the Gangetic Basin being one of the most studied areas in South Asia.

Finding the fish again proved incredibly challenging. An international research team spent days manually pumping thousands of liters of groundwater from local wells, hoping to recover a specimen they could study properly.

What they found amazed them. The fish, now named Gangaichthys indonepalicus, measures just four centimeters long and looks almost ghostly. It has no color pigmentation, its eyes are reduced and hidden beneath skin, and its body moves like an earthworm through narrow underground spaces.

Using advanced micro-CT scanning technology, researchers examined the delicate specimen without damaging it. The scans revealed it lacks ribs entirely, likely an adaptation for squeezing through tiny gaps in underground sediment.

Genetic analysis confirmed this wasn't just an unusual variant of a known species. The fish represents an entirely new genus, the first of its kind discovered in the family of earthworm eels from this massive river system.
