Turkey's Solar Power Hits Record 17% of Energy Mix in June

Turkey's solar panels are soaking up success. The country generated a record-breaking 4.99 billion kilowatt-hours of solar electricity in June 2026, the highest monthly output in its history.

That milestone means solar power supplied 16.4 percent of Turkey's total electricity for the month. Just a few years ago, solar contributed only a fraction of the nation's energy mix.

The solar surge came during June's longer daylight hours, which gave the country's expanding solar farms maximum production time. Total electricity generation also hit a June record of 30.35 billion kilowatt-hours.

But solar isn't Turkey's only renewable success story. Hydropower remains the country's largest electricity source, generating 10.54 billion kilowatt-hours or nearly 35 percent of June's total output.

Combined, renewable energy sources produced 20.65 billion kilowatt-hours last month. That's the highest monthly renewable generation Turkey has recorded since it began tracking this data in 2000.

The wins keep stacking up when you zoom out to the full year. In the first six months of 2026, hydropower generation reached a record 57 billion kilowatt-hours, wind power hit 21.5 billion kilowatt-hours, and solar generation totaled 19.2 billion kilowatt-hours.

Here's the really impressive part: domestic energy sources, which include renewables plus locally sourced fossil fuels, supplied 130.9 billion kilowatt-hours in the January through June period. That means Turkey is increasingly powering itself without relying on imported energy.

Turkey's renewable energy transformation is creating benefits far beyond cleaner air. By generating more electricity from domestic sources like sun and water, the country is reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels, which strengthens energy security and keeps more money in the local economy.

The shift to renewables also means more stable electricity prices for Turkish families and businesses. Unlike imported coal or natural gas, sunshine and flowing water don't have price swings based on global markets or geopolitical tensions.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar says the momentum will continue. "We will keep working to transform Anatolia's abundant solar potential into greater prosperity for our nation," he stated.

Turkey sits in an ideal location for solar power, with Anatolia receiving abundant sunshine year-round. The country has been rapidly installing solar panels and wind turbines as part of its national energy strategy, and these June numbers prove that investment is delivering real results.
