Two Latin American Authors Named Booker Prize Finalists

✨ Faith Restored

Argentine and Brazilian writers earned spots among 13 finalists for the prestigious International Booker Prize, bringing fresh voices from Latin America to the global stage. Both novels tackle historical injustices while celebrating resilience.

Two groundbreaking Latin American authors just scored major recognition on the world's literary stage, signaling a powerful shift toward diverse storytelling.

Argentina's Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, 57, and Brazil's Ana Paula Maia, 48, landed spots on the 2026 International Booker Prize longlist announced this week. The British award celebrates fiction translated into English and splits its $68,000 prize between author and translator.

Cabezón Cámara enters as a frontrunner after her novel "We Are Green and Trembling" already won the 2025 National Book Award in the United States. The book reimagines the life of Antonio de Erauso, a real figure from Spanish colonial times, giving voice to women and Indigenous peoples silenced by history.

"This fiercely imaginative reworking of colonial history gives voice to a 17th-century figure in the depths of the South American jungle," the judging panel said. US translator Robin Myers brought the 2023 novel to English-speaking readers.

This marks Cabezón Cámara's second International Booker nod. She earned a 2020 shortlist spot for "The Adventures of China Iron."

Maia's selection celebrates "On Earth As It Is Beneath," her 2017 novel exploring lives on the margins of Brazilian society. Canadian translator Padma Viswanathan made the work accessible to English readers.

"Set in a remote penal colony, this vivid and compelling novel unfolds in a landscape where punishment has replaced justice," the jury noted. The story offers a stark look at power and corruption through the eyes of society's forgotten workers.

The Ripple Effect: Despite 10 years of the International Booker Prize, no Spanish or Portuguese writer has won. These two finalists could break that barrier while bringing stories from Latin American perspectives to millions of new readers worldwide. The longlist will narrow to six titles on March 31.

The winner will be announced May 19 at London's Tate Modern, chosen from 128 works submitted by publishers.
