Uber Offers Drivers Up to $6,500 to Switch to Electric Cars
Uber just expanded its electric vehicle grant program nationwide, giving rideshare drivers up to $6,500 in incentives to make the switch from gas-guzzlers to EVs. The move comes as drivers are already choosing electric five times faster than average Americans.
Your Uber ride just got greener, and thousands of drivers are about to get serious help ditching their gas bills for good.
Uber announced this week it's expanding its "Go Electric" grant program to all drivers across the United States. The rideshare giant is offering up to $4,000 toward used electric vehicles, plus stacking discounts that can push total savings to $6,500.
The program started just six months ago in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, and New York City. The initial success convinced Uber to take it national, especially as gas prices climb and more riders specifically request electric trips.
The numbers tell an encouraging story. Uber drivers are switching to EVs five times faster than typical American car buyers. The platform now has over 286,000 electric vehicles cruising its global network, up from 200,000 just last October.
"The economics of owning an EV continue to improve," says Andrew Cornelia, Uber's Global Head of Electrification & Sustainability. He points to lower costs and better charging infrastructure as key drivers of the shift.

The Ripple Effect
This isn't just about one company's sustainability goals. Every electric Uber on the road means cleaner air in the neighborhoods where these cars spend most of their time picking up passengers.
Drivers save money too. No more gas station visits, lower maintenance costs, and in many cities, access to HOV lanes that help them complete more rides per shift.
Uber sweetened the deal with manufacturer partnerships. Kia is offering drivers an extra $1,000 off the Niro EV or EV6, and $1,500 off the EV9 SUV. Shopping through TrueCar adds another $1,000 discount on any new or used EV.
A Stanford Graduate School of Business case study recently praised Uber's approach, noting the company created a "self-reinforcing flywheel" where early investments in driver incentives sparked momentum that keeps building.
The timing matters. When the Trump Administration eliminated federal used EV tax credits, Uber's program filled that gap for gig workers who depend on their vehicles for income.
Applications open April 16, and Uber promises to guide drivers through the entire purchase process.
For drivers watching gas prices eat into their earnings, this could be the push they need to go electric and keep more money in their pockets while helping cities breathe easier.
