Uganda: 7.5km Road Connects 6,500 Residents to Services

For years, residents of Kayera and Katooke villages in Uganda couldn't reach hospitals or markets when roads turned to mud. Now, a newly rebuilt 7.5-kilometer road is opening doors that were previously closed.

The East African Crude Oil Pipeline company partnered with Hoima City to reconstruct the Nyamasoga-Katooke Road, connecting more than 600 households in rural Uganda. The marram road, located in Buseruka Sub-County, replaces a route that had become completely impassable for vehicles.

The upgraded road links these remote villages to the Kaiso-Tonya Highway, creating reliable access to trading centers in Nyamasoga and Buseruka. Parents can now get their children to school during rainy season, and farmers can transport goods to market without losing entire days to impassable conditions.

JB Habumugisha, Deputy Managing Director of EACOP, emphasized the company's focus on lasting community benefits. The project responded directly to a need identified by Hoima District leadership, who had watched residents struggle with isolation and limited economic opportunities.

The Ripple Effect

Better roads mean more than just easier travel. Local businesses in the trading centers can now receive supplies more reliably, and entrepreneurs have new confidence to invest in shops and services knowing customers can actually reach them.

Healthcare access has improved dramatically for the 6,500 residents who previously faced difficult choices during medical emergencies. Schools are seeing more consistent attendance now that students don't have to miss days when weather makes roads dangerous.

Rodgers Mbabazi, Resident District Commissioner for Hoima District, noted that infrastructure projects like this one create foundations for long-term economic growth. When communities can connect reliably to markets and services, opportunities multiply.

The road handover ceremony brought together local councillors, administrators, and residents at Katooke trading center. For people who had submitted requests for help year after year, seeing the completed road represented hope that their voices matter and change is possible.

This single road connects thousands of Ugandans to the opportunities that reliable infrastructure brings.
