UK Green Economy Now Worth £100bn, Powers 1 Million Jobs
Britain's clean energy revolution is creating better-paying jobs and economic growth across the entire country. New research shows the net zero economy now supports over a million workers earning 11% more than the national average.
Britain's green economy just hit a major milestone, proving that fighting climate change and creating prosperity can go hand in hand.
New research reveals the UK's net zero economy is now worth more than £100 billion annually and supports 1.1 million jobs nationwide. Even better news: workers in green industries earn an average of £43,000 per year, about 11% higher than the national average of £39,000.
The analysis by CBI Economics shows that around 308,000 people work directly in clean energy businesses, from solar panel installation to wind turbine manufacturing and electric vehicle production. When supply chains and related businesses are counted, that number jumps to over a million jobs spread across every region of the country.
These aren't just any jobs. Each worker in the net zero economy generates nearly £120,000 annually for the wider economy, about 1.5 times the national average. That kind of productivity boost matters enormously for a country struggling with sluggish economic growth.
About 22,000 small businesses across the UK are now engaged in clean energy and emissions reduction activities. Together, the green economy accounts for nearly 4% of the nation's total economic output.

The pipeline looks even brighter. An estimated £455 billion in energy infrastructure investment is queued up, driven by the government's ambitious target to decarbonize electricity by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Louise Hellem, chief economist for the CBI, put it simply: "At a time when the UK must strengthen energy security and drive growth, the net zero economy is becoming central to the country's future competitiveness."
The Ripple Effect
The benefits reach far beyond individual paychecks. Communities across Britain are seeing real economic revival through clean energy projects. From wind farms in Shetland to home insulation businesses in local neighborhoods, the green transition is creating opportunities in places that desperately need them.
This growth stands in stark contrast to declining fossil fuel sectors. North Sea oil and gas jobs have dropped by 200,000 since 2013, despite government support and favorable tax treatment for most of that period.
Climate Minister Katie White captured the moment perfectly: "What businesses and communities are delivering across the country is a great British success story, bringing down costs, improving homes, supporting British industry with good skilled jobs whilst helping protect nature."
The clean energy revolution is proving that protecting the planet and building prosperity aren't competing goals.
