UK Invests £86M in Clean Hydrogen Manufacturing Plant

The UK government is betting big on homegrown clean energy, pouring £86.5 million into ITM Power to build a next-generation hydrogen equipment factory in South Yorkshire.

The investment combines £40 million from Great British Energy, the government's public energy company, with a £46.5 million grant from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Together, the funds will establish a 1 gigawatt automated production line for ITM Power's newest electrolyzer technology, called Chronos.

Electrolyzers are the workhorses of green hydrogen production. They use electricity to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, creating fuel that burns without carbon emissions. As the world races to replace fossil fuels, this technology is becoming essential for powering heavy industry, trucks, and energy storage systems.

ITM Power unveiled the Chronos system for the first time at the award ceremony. The company says it will set new benchmarks for both performance and affordability when it officially launches. Their current system, Trident, will continue serving existing customers while the new technology scales up.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized what this means for local communities. "This investment is the Government's clean energy mission in action, rebuilding our energy security with clean homegrown power and good industrial jobs for South Yorkshire," he said. The project will create hundreds of well-paid manufacturing positions in Britain's industrial heartlands.

The Ripple Effect

This investment represents more than just one factory. It positions the UK as a serious player in the global hydrogen economy, keeping vital engineering expertise on British soil instead of losing it to competitors overseas.

Dan McGrail, CEO of Great British Energy, called it "our Energy Engineered in the UK strategy in action." By backing domestic innovation, the government is helping British companies scale up and compete internationally while building energy independence.

ITM Power CEO Dennis Schulz connected the dots to bigger picture concerns. "Clean power increasingly underpins energy sovereignty and resilience, which are critical to long-term economic success against a backdrop of recent geopolitical instability," he explained.

The company already designs and manufactures industrial-scale electrolyzers with proven track records on major projects. This expansion will dramatically increase their capacity to help industrial and energy companies meet decarbonization goals while making green hydrogen more affordable and accessible.

Young people in South Yorkshire now have a clear path to skilled careers without leaving their hometowns, building the clean energy infrastructure the world desperately needs.
