UK Secures Record 14.7 GW Clean Energy for 16M Homes

Britain just made its largest clean energy commitment in history, and families across the country are about to feel the benefits in their wallets.

The UK government secured a record 201 renewable energy projects that will generate 14.7 gigawatts of clean power. That's enough electricity to supply 16 million homes with energy that costs less than half the price of gas.

The latest auction delivered breakthrough wins for solar and onshore wind, with prices locked in at £65.23 per megawatt hour for solar and £72.24 for wind. Compare that to £147 for new gas power stations, and the savings become crystal clear.

Among the winning projects is the West Burton Solar Farm, the largest solar farm ever to receive a government renewables contract. The site sits where Britain's last coal-fired power station once stood, transforming old fossil fuel infrastructure into a clean energy powerhouse.

Cornwall scored the Imerys Wind Farm, the largest onshore wind project in England in a decade. Scotland's Sanquhar II Wind Farm became the fourth-largest onshore wind farm in the entire UK, bringing jobs and investment to Dumfries and Galloway.

The projects will unlock £5 billion in private investment and support up to 10,000 jobs across Britain. Construction starts soon, with families seeing lower energy bills once the facilities begin generating power.

The Ripple Effect

This massive renewable energy push does more than just light up homes. It shields Britain from the volatile global gas market that has triggered half of all recessions since the 1970s.

When the next gas price shock hits international markets, British families will feel less pain. Each new solar panel and wind turbine reduces the country's dependence on imported fossil fuels, keeping more money in local economies.

The government paired this announcement with a £1 billion fund allowing communities to own and control their own clean energy projects. Neighborhoods across the UK can now build community wealth while generating their own power, the largest public investment in community energy in British history.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband pointed to the numbers as proof that clean British power is simply the right economic choice. Neil McDermott, Chief Executive of the Low Carbon Contracts Company, celebrated how these projects provide certainty to investors while supporting British jobs at scale.

The auction came just weeks after Britain secured Europe's largest offshore wind procurement, defying global industry challenges. Together, these wins put the UK firmly on track to meet its 2030 clean power target while delivering energy independence and lower costs.
