Thousands of glowing solar-powered lights in various colors illuminating the desert near Uluru at dusk

Uluru's Field of Light Extended After 750K Visitors

🤯 Mind Blown

An art installation of 50,000 glowing solar lights near Australia's Uluru just got renewed for three more years after captivating visitors for a decade. What started as a sketch in 1992 has become one of the region's most beloved attractions.

A decade ago, artist Bruce Munro turned a 34-year-old dream into reality when he installed 50,000 solar-powered lights near Uluru, creating a breathtaking sea of color that shifts from blue to purple to pink under the desert stars. Now, after welcoming over 750,000 visitors, the Field of Light is staying for three more years.

The story began in 1992 when Munro and his now-wife traveled through Australia in an old Toyota Corona with just a tent. Visiting Uluru left him so moved that he immediately sketched an idea in his notebook: a field of glowing lights that would capture the connection he felt to the ancient landscape.

"Uluru was one of those destinations we wanted to see," Munro said. "The experience was so extraordinary... it's a place that just makes you feel very alive and connected with the world around you."

That sketch became an obsession. It took Munro 10 years to create his first version in his backyard in the UK, then展览 toured museums across England. Everything changed when an ABC radio presenter in Alice Springs interviewed him and asked about his dream.

Days after Munro said he wished to install the work at Uluru itself, Voyages Tourism Australia called. In 2016, the Field of Light finally came home to the place that inspired it.

The installation now covers the space of five football fields. Visitors weave between desert oaks and spinifex as glowing orbs float above the sandy ground like electric flowers, with Uluru's dark form rising on the horizon.

The Ripple Effect

The Field of Light has become more than just an art installation. It's boosted tourism across Australia's Northern Territory, with visitors often extending their trips to Alice Springs and beyond.

Matt Cameron-Smith, CEO of Voyages Tourism Australia, says the installation has won awards globally for both its artistic merit and uniqueness. "It really is a celebration of light, of art and of country," he said.

Ten years later, Munro still feels the same wonder he experienced in 1992. "Look, ultimately Uluru is the inspiration that creates the feelings that makes people have reactions," he said. "Every time I come back here, I still feel the same way about it."
