UN Launches Dashboard to Measure Progress Beyond GDP

The world is about to get a better way to measure success, and it could change how we think about progress forever.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the "Beyond GDP" report this week, introducing a dashboard that tracks what people actually care about: health, education, environmental quality, job security, and equality. The framework comes after Member States called for better measurements in the Pact for the Future, recognizing that economic growth alone doesn't tell the whole story.

A High-Level Expert Group spent the past year consulting with stakeholders worldwide to develop practical indicators. Their mission was simple: create metrics that align with what humanity actually values, not just what generates income.

The disconnect between GDP and real wellbeing has become impossible to ignore. While the global economy grew over 50 percent during Guterres' tenure, conflicts have reached levels not seen since World War II. Deforestation and fossil fuel burning boost GDP numbers even as they harm the planet and future generations.

The new dashboard focuses on four key areas. First, it measures the wellbeing of people and planet, including work quality, health outcomes, education access, and environmental conditions. Second, it tracks equity and inclusion, refusing to accept inequality as inevitable.

Third, the framework assesses sustainability and resilience, looking at how countries preserve natural assets and knowledge for future progress. Fourth, it anchors everything in foundational principles: peace, human rights, and planetary respect drawn directly from the UN Charter.

The Ripple Effect

This shift arrives at a crucial moment. As artificial intelligence promises to revolutionize productivity, measuring success solely by GDP could blind us to millions of lost jobs or increasingly sophisticated weapons. The Beyond GDP dashboard ensures we judge technological advancement by its impact on human flourishing, not just economic output.

The framework builds on decades of research and country-led initiatives, translating the 17 Sustainable Development Goals into a practical compass for everyday decisions. It recognizes that in our interconnected world, what happens in one country affects others, making this truly a global issue that demands the UN's unique platform.

Now the real work begins as Member States enter the intergovernmental process to refine and institutionalize the dashboard. Governments, civil society, media, and statistical agencies will collaborate to establish these new measurements.
