US Adds 130K Jobs in January, Beats Expectations

The US economy came out swinging in 2026, adding 130,000 jobs in January and crushing economist predictions of just 75,000 new positions.

The unemployment rate dropped from 4.4% to 4.3%, giving Americans fresh reasons to feel optimistic about the job market. It's the strongest month of employment gains since December 2024, suggesting the economy may have turned a corner.

"The latest data show hiring came out of the gate stronger than expected to start the year," said Daniel Zhao, chief economist with Glassdoor. After months of sluggish growth, the labor market appears to be finding its stride.

Healthcare led the charge, adding 123,500 jobs as an aging population continues driving demand for medical services and support. The sector has become a reliable engine of job creation even when other industries struggle.

Josh Hirt, senior economist at Vanguard, says the report suggests the labor market is stabilizing. While it's too early to declare a full rebound, the numbers point in the right direction.

The report did reveal that 2025 was weaker than initially thought, with annual revisions showing just 181,000 jobs added versus the previously reported 584,000. But economists say those backward-looking adjustments make January's strong performance even more meaningful.
