US Renewable Energy Capacity to Jump 62% in 2026

The numbers tell a story of transformation: renewable energy capacity will surge 62% more in 2026 than it did last year, according to fresh data from the US Energy Information Administration.

Solar power shattered records in 2025, growing an impressive 28% and now providing nearly 9% of all American electricity. That's up from less than 7% just a year ago, marking one of the fastest expansions of any energy source in US history.

Wind turbines maintained their crown as the top renewable source, generating over 10% of the nation's electricity. In December alone, wind power jumped 19% compared to the previous year, showing the technology's momentum isn't slowing down.

Together, renewables now produce more electricity than coal and nuclear power combined. The mix of wind, solar, hydropower, biomass, and geothermal accounted for nearly 26% of total US electricity in 2025, up from 24% the year before.

Battery storage experienced explosive growth too, expanding by more than 58% in 2025. These massive batteries store excess solar and wind energy for use when the sun sets or wind stops, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges.

The forecast for 2026 looks even brighter. Utilities plan to install enough solar panels to power millions more homes, nearly double their wind capacity additions, and add 57% more battery storage than last year.

Meanwhile, fossil fuel capacity is shrinking. Coal plants shed nearly 4,400 megawatts of capacity in 2025, while new natural gas barely registered. Nuclear added just 60 megawatts compared to renewables' 55,000 megawatt explosion.

The Ripple Effect

This shift touches every American community. Cleaner air means healthier kids and fewer asthma attacks in cities. Rural areas gain new economic opportunities through wind and solar farms that provide steady income to farmers and landowners.

By year's end, renewable energy capacity could surpass natural gas for the first time in modern history. Solar alone will exceed coal's capacity and double nuclear power's footprint, though those older plants still run more consistently.

The transformation happened faster than experts predicted just five years ago, proving that momentum builds on itself when communities, companies, and technology align toward a common goal.
