US Solar Power Overtakes Coal for First Time Ever

For the first time ever, America generated more electricity from sunshine than from coal.

In May 2024, solar power produced 45.5 terawatt-hours of electricity across the United States, edging past coal generation and setting a new record. Solar accounted for 12.8% of the nation's total electricity, while coal dropped to 12.2%, according to energy analysts at Ember.

The milestone caps a remarkable transformation. Just three years ago in 2021, coal still commanded nearly 20% of America's power grid while solar contributed only 5.4%. Now solar has climbed into the top three electricity sources nationwide, trailing only natural gas and nuclear power.

The shift happened faster than many experts predicted. Solar generation jumped 17% compared to May 2023, driven by thousands of new solar installations coming online across the country. Every month, more rooftops, fields, and parking lots become mini power plants soaking up free energy from the sky.

May's numbers carry extra significance because spring typically gives solar its best showing. Longer daylight hours combine with mild temperatures that reduce air conditioning demand, allowing solar panels to supply a bigger slice of America's electricity needs. Peak solar generation usually arrives in June or July when sunshine is strongest.

The timing creates new challenges for grid operators who must balance rapid midday surges in solar power with evening drop-offs as the sun sets. But utilities are adapting, treating solar as a permanent fixture rather than an experiment.

The Ripple Effect

This American milestone reflects a global pattern gaining momentum. Countries worldwide are watching their solar capacity climb while coal plants sit idle or shut down permanently. The transition protects air quality, reduces carbon emissions, and creates thousands of jobs installing and maintaining solar systems.

For families and businesses, the trend means more stable long-term electricity costs. Sunlight doesn't have a price tag, and solar panels keep generating for decades once installed. As solar grows, the country depends less on fuel that must be mined, transported, and burned.
