Used EVs 12% Cheaper as Americans Find Greener Rides
More Americans are switching to electric vehicles as used EV prices drop 8.5% in a year, making clean transportation more affordable than ever. With gas prices hitting $4 per gallon, hundreds of thousands of budget-friendly electric cars are giving drivers a chance to save money and the planet.
Americans looking to escape rising gas prices are finding an unexpected opportunity: electric vehicles they can actually afford.
Used EV sales jumped 12% in the first quarter compared to last year, according to Cox Automotive. The surge comes as hundreds of thousands of electric cars purchased on lease in the early 2020s are returning to the market, creating a wave of affordable options for buyers.
The supply boom has driven used EV prices down 8.5% between February 2025 and February 2026. The average price gap between used electric and gas-powered vehicles has shrunk from nearly $5,000 to just $1,334.
"We're seeing a meaningful reset in EV pricing," said Stephanie Valdez Streaty, Cox's director of industry insights. The timing couldn't be better for shoppers watching gas prices climb past $4 per gallon for the first time since 2022.
Jessica Caldwell, head of insights at Edmunds, sees the discounted used models as a "gateway" to EV ownership for people who might never have considered going electric before. Many buyers are discovering that today's used EVs are dramatically better than models from just a few years ago.

The trend is happening even as new EV sales have slowed, partly due to the withdrawal of a $7,500 consumer tax credit. But for budget-conscious shoppers facing record-high car ownership costs, the used market is opening doors.
The Ripple Effect
The shift toward affordable used EVs is quietly addressing concerns that have held back electric vehicle adoption. U.S. charging infrastructure accelerated its build-out last year, making it easier for new EV owners to find places to charge.
Mike Murphy, co-founder of EVs For All America, sees the bigger picture. "The dream of mass EV adoption here in America is not dead yet," he said.
Detroit automakers are paying attention too. GM's North America president Duncan Aldred told an automotive forum this week that the company had seen "some peaking of interest" in EVs among buyers during the past month as gas prices climbed.
Car manufacturers including Ford and GM are planning a new generation of more affordable electric vehicles for release over the next few years. In the meantime, the used market is giving thousands of Americans their first taste of electric driving at prices they can afford.
For families trying to stretch every dollar while gas prices soar, these budget-friendly electric cars offer something rare: a chance to save money while making a greener choice.
