Used EVs Under $25K Speed Past New Car Sales

Affordable electric vehicles are finally here, and Americans are snatching them up faster than gas-powered cars.

Nearly 89,000 used electric vehicles found new homes in the last three months of 2025, jumping 13.5% from the previous year. Even better, these cars are flying off dealer lots in about 50 days, outpacing traditional gas vehicles, while new EV sales dropped 36% in the same period.

The secret? Simple economics paired with great news about battery durability. Those two or three-year-old EVs that flooded the market are now selling for half their original price, and their batteries are proving far more reliable than anyone expected.

Almost 40% of used EVs now sell for under $25,000. A Nissan Leaf that can power your home during a blackout? Just $12,000. That's actually cheaper than a comparable gas-powered Nissan Versa at $14,000.

The math gets even better when you factor in what you're actually getting. Used electric vehicles average one year newer and have 30,000 fewer miles than gas cars at the same price point. Plus, they come with battery warranties covering at least eight years or 100,000 miles.

Liz Najman from Recurrent, a company providing EV data to dealers and shoppers, calls affordability the buzzword of the year. "You're talking about something with a lot of technology and a warranty on the battery," she said.

The Ripple Effect

This growing used market is creating a powerful cycle of sustainability. When EV owners go shopping for their next car, more than 90% choose electric again. That loyalty means today's used EV buyers become tomorrow's new EV customers.

The cost savings extend far beyond the sticker price. Without radiators, spark plugs, or oil changes, electric vehicles are proving more reliable over time. A University of Michigan study found the total cost of owning a used EV dramatically beats any other vehicle type, thanks to lower fuel and maintenance bills.

Stephanie Valdez Streaty from Cox Automotive says bargain hunters have perfect timing. Premium models like the BMW i7, Cadillac Lyriq, and Tesla Cybertruck are hitting the used market for the first time this year as their three-year leases end.

The wave of affordable electric transportation is just beginning, making clean energy accessible to millions more American families.
