Uzbekistan and Türkiye Expand University Partnership

Uzbekistan and Türkiye are turning their friendship into academic opportunity, with both countries committing to deeper cooperation in higher education and scientific research.

On January 28, education leaders from both nations met in Tashkent to map out an ambitious partnership. Minister Kungurotboy Sharipov of Uzbekistan sat down with Erol Özvar, Chairman of Türkiye's Council of Higher Education, to discuss how their countries can help more students access world-class education.

The timing couldn't be better. Just one day after the meeting, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited Türkiye at President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's invitation, signaling that educational cooperation sits at the heart of their strategic partnership.

The two countries have been busy building connections. Between 2022 and 2024, they hosted educational forums in İzmir, Samarkand, and Istanbul, where universities formed partnerships and launched joint degree programs. Students in both nations can now access educational opportunities that didn't exist just a few years ago.

One of the most exciting projects on the table is the International University of Turkic States. Leaders discussed practical steps to get it running, including hiring professors and expanding digital learning resources. Türkiye will play a key role in launching the university's full operations.

The partnership extends beyond classrooms. Both sides are working to establish a branch of the Yunus Emre Institute, a Turkish cultural center, at Tashkent State University of Uzbek Language and Literature. The center will help students learn about Turkish culture while strengthening the humanitarian bonds between the two peoples.

Scientific collaboration matters too. The countries reviewed their agreement on sharing scientific knowledge, engineering developments, and high technologies, ensuring researchers can work together on innovations that benefit both nations.

The Ripple Effect: When countries invest in educational partnerships, the benefits multiply across generations. Students gain access to broader opportunities, universities share expertise, and both nations build workforces ready for tomorrow's challenges.
