Vietnam Leader Wins Tolstoy Peace Prize for Diplomacy

President To Lam of Vietnam received the 2026 Lev N. Tolstoy International Peace Prize on July 24. An international jury voted unanimously to honor his efforts strengthening cooperation between nations and advancing respect for international law.

The award carries special meaning because it celebrates Vietnam's remarkable journey. Jury chairman Valery Gergiev, who leads Russia's prestigious Mariinsky Theatre, noted how Vietnam became one of Asia's fastest-growing economies while keeping its cultural identity strong.

Vladimir Tolstoy, great-great-grandson of author Leo Tolstoy and director of the Tolstoy museum, joined French leader Pierre de Gaulle and South African parliamentarian Lindiwe Sisulu in making the selection.

They praised President Lam for promoting dialogue and justice on the world stage. The jury specifically recognized how he carries forward Vietnam's traditions of peaceful problem-solving and humanitarian values.
