Village Boy Without Internet Now Works With NASA

A boy from a small Karnataka village where the internet hadn't reached is now providing Earth observation data to NASA. The journey from Aldur to outer space started with a father's weekly trips to a bookstore.

Awais Ahmed, 28, is the CEO of Pixxel, a space-tech startup that recently secured a NASA contract to provide hyperspectral Earth observation data. His company captures images of Earth in far greater detail than conventional satellites can.

But Awais didn't grow up with YouTube tutorials or online courses. Instead, his father Nadeem Ahmed, who runs a pharmacy, invested his earnings in books about science and space.

"I was fascinated by the solar system, nebulae and black holes," Awais told The Hindu. "Those books sparked my curiosity about space." Every week, Nadeem took his son to Subbarao & Sons bookstore in Chikkamagaluru, letting him choose whatever sparked his interest.

His mother Ghazala Tashfeen and father encouraged their only child to chase his fascination wherever it led. They didn't have much money, but they had vision.

The sacrifices ran deep. Nadeem remembers his son studying until 2 a.m., then waking early to continue. When Awais got into BITS Pilani for a dual degree program, his parents took out an education loan and eventually pledged their gold to cover costs.

At BITS Pilani, Awais joined Team Anant, the university's satellite program. There he met Kshitij Khandelwal, who would become his co-founder in 2019 when they launched Pixxel together.

Why This Inspires

Awais's story reminds us that curiosity needs fuel, not fancy tools. His parents couldn't give him high-speed internet or expensive tech camps, but they gave him something better: the steady message that his questions mattered and his dreams were worth investing in.

"Now, having witnessed his hard work, we feel proud of his achievement," Nadeem said. The pride is mutual.

Today, Pixxel is building a constellation of hyperspectral satellites, and a village boy who once read about space by lamplight is helping NASA see Earth more clearly than ever before.
