VinFast Hits 10,000 EVs Made in India in Under a Year
A Vietnamese automaker just proved it's serious about India, rolling out its 10,000th electric vehicle from a brand-new factory in Tamil Nadu. The milestone shows that global EV competition is heating up in one of the world's fastest-growing car markets.
VinFast Auto India just hit 10,000 electric vehicles produced at its Thoothukudi plant in Tamil Nadu, less than a year after opening the doors in August 2025. For a newcomer in a market dominated by legacy brands, that's a strong signal the company isn't just testing the waters.
The plant sits on 400 acres in the SIPCOT Industrial Park and can currently build 50,000 vehicles per year, with room to scale up to 150,000 when demand calls for it. VinFast chose Tamil Nadu for good reason: the state already has a deep network of auto suppliers, port access for potential exports, and a skilled workforce ready to go.
The first 10,000 units are the hardest because they test everything at once. Supply chains need to work smoothly, assembly lines need to run without hiccups, and dealers need to be ready to support customers. VinFast passed that early checkpoint while building two premium electric SUVs, the VF 6 and VF 7, priced from ₹16.49 lakh and ₹20.89 lakh respectively.
Both models earned 5-star safety ratings from Bharat NCAP, which matters enormously to Indian families shopping in this price range. Safety scores have become just as important as battery range and charging speed for buyers making the jump to electric.

The Ripple Effect
VinFast's success is adding healthy pressure to India's EV market, where Tata Motors currently leads and players like Mahindra, MG, BYD, and Hyundai are building momentum. More serious competition typically means better prices, faster innovation, and stronger warranties for everyone.
The company isn't stopping with passenger cars either. In December 2025, VinFast announced a $500 million investment to add electric buses and scooters to the Tamil Nadu lineup, targeting segments where electrification is already gaining traction faster than private cars.
India represents VinFast's first manufacturing base outside Vietnam, and the company has openly stated plans to use Thoothukudi as an export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. That means more jobs, more supplier partnerships, and more technology transfer to the local ecosystem.
For Indian EV buyers, the milestone translates to one simple truth: they now have another serious option backed by real manufacturing muscle, not just import promises. When global brands commit billions and prove they can deliver thousands of vehicles on schedule, the entire market gets stronger and customer confidence grows.
