Volkswagen Delivers 2 Millionth Electric Vehicle

Volkswagen reached a major milestone this week when it delivered its two millionth all-electric vehicle to a customer in Dresden, Germany. The anniversary car, a sleek ID.3, represents more than just a number—it shows how far the automaker has come since launching its first dedicated electric vehicle in 2013.

The journey started small with the e-up! over a decade ago. Today, Volkswagen leads the European electric vehicle market and ranks among the world's highest-volume electric manufacturers.

Three models have driven this success story. The ID.3 has found 628,000 homes since launching in 2020 as Volkswagen's first purpose-built electric car. The ID.4 SUV became the real breakout star, with 901,000 vehicles delivered worldwide across Europe, China, and the United States. Even the newest addition, the ID.7 launched in 2023, has already reached 132,000 customers looking for long-range luxury.

The delivery ceremony took place at Volkswagen's Transparent Factory in Dresden, a facility that's transformed into a customer experience center. Last year alone, 3,500 vehicles were handed over there, with over 90 percent being electric or hybrid models.

Meanwhile, the Zwickau plant in Germany continues humming along as a production powerhouse, building approximately 212,000 electric cars in 2025. It's become the backbone of Volkswagen's electric manufacturing network.

The Ripple Effect

Volkswagen's electric push is making zero-emission driving accessible to more people. The company plans to launch four new electric models in 2026, including the ID. Polo aimed at small car buyers who've been priced out of the electric market. These affordable options could help accelerate the shift away from gas-powered vehicles across Europe's high-volume segments.

The German automaker's success also signals a broader shift in the automotive industry. When one of the world's largest car manufacturers commits this heavily to electric vehicles, it creates momentum that benefits everyone from charging infrastructure companies to battery suppliers to customers who gain more choices.
