Walmart Opens 100th EV Charging Station Across 20 States

Electric vehicle drivers can now charge up while grabbing groceries at 100 Walmart locations nationwide. The retail giant just opened its 100th company-owned EV fast-charging site in Monument, Colorado, marking a significant step toward making electric vehicles practical for everyday Americans.

The charging stations sit steps from store entrances, turning a necessary pit stop into a productive shopping trip. Most locations feature 8 to 16 fast-charging stalls that deliver up to 400 kilowatts of power, enough to add significant range in the time it takes to pick up household essentials.

Walmart integrated the charging experience directly into its app, letting customers start and pay for charging sessions from their phones. The stations work with both major charging connector types, making them compatible with most EVs on the road today.

"When a customer pulls into a Walmart to charge, we want the experience to feel as reliable and effortless as the rest of their shopping trip," said Adam Happel, general manager of Walmart retail EV charging. Members of the Walmart+ program get discounted charging rates for additional savings.

The company announced plans in 2023 to add EV charging stations to thousands of Walmart and Sam's Club stores coast to coast by 2030. The expansion focuses on markets where customers need greater access to fast charging, working with local utilities and partners to bring new sites online.

The Ripple Effect

This network does more than serve existing EV drivers. By placing chargers at stores that millions of Americans already visit weekly, Walmart removes one of the biggest barriers keeping people from switching to electric vehicles: charging anxiety.

The company's massive footprint reaches communities that other charging networks often overlook. With over 10,900 stores across the country, Walmart can bring fast charging to small towns and rural areas where infrastructure has lagged behind coastal cities.

The approach turns an everyday errand into an opportunity to charge, eliminating the need for special trips to charging stations. Drivers can find current and upcoming locations through the Walmart app or major mapping platforms like Google Maps and Apple Maps.

Walmart also partners separately with Electrify America to operate additional charging stations at select locations, creating even more options for EV drivers. The combination positions the retailer as a key player in America's transition to electric transportation.

Reaching 100 sites represents real progress toward making electric vehicles practical for mainstream America, one grocery run at a time.
