Watertown Purse Auction Raises $12K for Rural Transport
A creative fundraiser in Northern New York just raised $12,000 to help residents who need rides to doctor appointments and jobs. Designer handbags filled with donated gifts turned into transportation lifelines for an entire community.
For 11 years, purses have been changing lives in Watertown, New York. The annual Posh Purse Palooza fundraiser brought in $12,000 this May to support the Volunteer Transportation Center, a nonprofit that drives people to medical appointments, jobs, schools, and other essential destinations across Northern New York.
The May 7 event at Garland City Beer Works combined in-person bidding with online auctions, featuring 25 designer handbags from Coach, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, and other high-end brands. Each purse arrived stuffed with donated treasures like gift certificates, jewelry, scarves, and cosmetics.
Ten purses launched online before the event, with 15 more added the night of the fundraiser. Guests sipped signature cocktails while bidding on handbags throughout the evening, and additional purses went home through raffles.
The brewery went beyond hosting, running a monthlong round-up campaign where customers could donate spare change at checkout. That grassroots approach added even more funds to support transportation services.
Strong turnout reflected the community's understanding of what's at stake. In rural areas, lacking a ride can mean missing cancer screenings, losing job opportunities, or skipping physical therapy appointments that speed recovery.

The Ripple Effect
Transportation access creates cascading benefits that touch entire families. When someone can get to work consistently, household income stabilizes. When seniors reach doctor appointments, their conditions get managed before becoming emergencies that strain hospitals.
The Volunteer Transportation Center serves people who have exhausted other options. Public transit often doesn't reach rural communities, and ride-sharing services remain sparse outside cities.
Local businesses and residents have supported the fundraiser since its 2015 launch, donating purses, merchandise, and services year after year. The event paused only once during the 2020 pandemic but bounced back strong.
WWNY-TV's Beth Hall returned as emcee, and committee volunteers coordinated sponsors, donations, and logistics. Corporate sponsors and individual donors from across the region contributed to the $12,000 total.
Next year's Posh Purse Palooza is already scheduled for May 6, and organizers are accepting donations now for future auctions.
