Webb Telescope Captures Galaxy From Dinosaur Era

Scientists have captured a breathtaking snapshot of the distant past: a galaxy whose light set out on its journey to us when T. rex had just disappeared from Earth.

The James Webb Space Telescope photographed NGC 5134, a spiral galaxy located 65 million light-years away in the Virgo constellation. The light captured in the image left that galaxy right around the time of the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.

The February 20th observation reveals NGC 5134's tightly wound spiral arms in jaw-dropping detail. Two of Webb's instruments worked together to create the complete picture: MIRI highlighted warm dust and complex molecules in the galaxy's clouds, while NIRCam captured the stars and clusters embedded within them.

Despite the mind-boggling distance, NGC 5134 is actually considered a close neighbor in cosmic terms. That relative proximity allows Webb to pick out fine details that would be invisible in more distant galaxies, which appear only as faint points of light.
