Weekly Yoga Cuts Insomnia, Fatigue in Cancer Survivors

😊 Feel Good

A new study shows just two yoga sessions per week dramatically improved sleep, mood, and energy for cancer survivors recovering from treatment. The four-week program offered relief without medication.

Cancer survivors struggling with insomnia and exhaustion after treatment now have promising news: a simple yoga practice could make all the difference.

Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center studied 410 cancer survivors and found that twice-weekly yoga sessions led to major improvements in sleep quality, mood, and energy levels. The best part? Results appeared in just four weeks.

The study included survivors averaging 54 years old, with 75% having battled breast cancer. None had practiced yoga regularly in the prior three months. Half received standard care alone, while the other half added the Yoga for Cancer Survivors program to their recovery.

The yoga group attended two 75-minute sessions each week. Classes combined 18 gentle poses from Hatha and Restorative yoga styles, along with breathing exercises and mindfulness training.

The improvements were substantial. Survivors in the yoga group reported moderate to large reductions in overall mood disturbance and fatigue. They also experienced small to medium reductions in anxiety.

The researchers found that better sleep quality appeared to drive many of these improvements. When survivors slept better, their mood and energy naturally improved too.

"This indicates that cancer survivors have an option to alleviate these cancer-related side effects at the same time, without adding another drug," said lead investigator Dr. Yuri Choi of the Wilmot Cancer Institute.

The Bright Side

The study revealed no major safety concerns or serious adverse events from the yoga practice. This means cancer survivors have a safe, drug-free option for addressing multiple recovery challenges at once.

The research team is now working to make yoga more accessible to all cancer patients. They're developing a mobile app to reach survivors in rural communities who may not have easy access to qualified instructors.

Dr. Choi recommends survivors look for certified yoga instructors experienced in working with cancer patients. Studios might call these classes Foundations Yoga or Healing Yoga instead of Gentle Hatha or Restorative yoga. Oncology teams can often provide referrals to qualified local instructors.

While the study was limited to four weeks and included mostly white women with breast cancer, the findings suggest a promising path forward. More research will explore long-term benefits and effectiveness across diverse cancer survivor populations.

For now, cancer survivors have new hope that recovery doesn't require another prescription.
