Western Australia Smashes Grain Harvest Record by 2M Tonnes

Western Australia's grain farmers are celebrating something truly remarkable: the biggest harvest in the state's history.

The final numbers are in, and they're staggering. Growers brought in 27.2 million tonnes of grain this season, crushing the previous 2022 record by 2 million tonnes. That's enough wheat and barley to fill millions of grocery stores and bakeries around the world.

The success came from a perfect storm of good decisions and good fortune. Farmers planted nearly half a million more hectares this year compared to 2022, many switching from livestock to crops. Then favorable rainfall in key growing regions delivered yields that exceeded everyone's expectations.

"It wasn't a particularly good start further north," said Michael Lamond, author of the Grain Industry Association report. But the southern regions more than made up for it, producing what he called an exceptional outcome that few anticipated at the season's start.

Lake Grace farmer Royce Taylor, who's worked the land for 37 years, called it his second-largest production year ever. "The barley yields in the Lake Grace area this year were huge," he said. His region now calls itself the Barley Belt, a testament to how spectacularly the crop performed.

The CBH Group's Esperance port zone alone received a record 4.05 million tonnes, while Albany brought in 5.35 million tonnes. Multiple days saw over 150,000 tonnes delivered in a single day, a massive effort from growers, contractors, and staff working around the clock.

The Ripple Effect

This harvest means more than impressive numbers on a spreadsheet. The bounty will inject over $10 billion into Western Australia's economy, supporting rural communities, local businesses, and countless jobs across the supply chain.

The grain will travel from port to plate, feeding families across Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. Every tonne represents food security for communities that depend on Australia's reliable, high-quality grain exports.

Even as global markets face oversupply challenges that may pressure prices, the sheer volume of this harvest demonstrates Australian agriculture's resilience and innovation. Improved crop varieties, better farming techniques, and smart adaptation to climate patterns all played a role.

Not every farmer shared in the success. A pocket stretching from Goodlands through north of Kalannie to east of Merredin missed out on the favorable conditions. "It's always tough when you see everyone have a great season and you haven't had one," said Mollerin grower Cathy Cooke, reminding everyone to stay mindful of struggling neighbors.

Still, this record harvest stands as proof that smart farming practices combined with favorable conditions can produce extraordinary results that benefit entire regions and countries beyond.
