Engineers are already designing the next generation of wind turbines with their retirement in mind. Newer blades use different resins that can be broken down with a mild chemical solution, releasing intact glass fibers and reusable liquid resin. This transforms disposal from a transportation headache into a straightforward chemistry problem.

Those advanced blades won't need recycling for another 20 years, but the system to handle them is already being built. Meanwhile, the 7,000 blades already processed have kept thousands of tons of coal out of cement kilns, turning yesterday's waste problem into today's carbon solution.

The turbine blades that once seemed destined for permanent burial are now fueling an industry that builds the world around us, one cement batch at a time.
