Wisconsin Wins $25M for 42 New EV Charging Stations

Wisconsin drivers just got a major boost for their electric vehicle future, thanks to a successful legal fight that unlocked $25 million in federal funding for 42 new charging stations.

The money comes from a federal program that was temporarily frozen by the Trump administration earlier this year. Wisconsin joined 15 other states in suing to restore the congressionally authorized funds, and a federal judge ruled in their favor in January.

The new charging stations will pop up at gas stations, hotels, and grocery stores near major interstates across the state. Communities from Hayward in the north to Racine in the south will benefit from the expanded network.

Wisconsin already has 25 charging stations up and running from this same federal program, with strong usage numbers showing real demand. The state has secured funding for 120 fast chargers total through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, created under the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

State Department of Transportation Secretary Kristina Boardman highlighted the practical benefits. The stations offer fast charging at convenient spots where drivers can grab groceries, check into hotels, or run other errands while their vehicles charge up.

The Ripple Effect

These charging stations do more than serve EV drivers. They bring customers into local communities, supporting fuel retailers, grocery stores, hotels, and restaurants along the way.

The expansion helps Wisconsin keep pace with global trends toward electric vehicles. Clean Wisconsin spokesperson Amy Barrilleaux noted that countries worldwide are making this transition, and Wisconsin needs to stay competitive in the 21st century economy.

The federal funding program expires at the end of September. Wisconsin leaders are now calling on Congress to continue supporting these infrastructure projects that connect communities and support local businesses while moving toward cleaner energy.
