Worcester County Wins $150K to Diversify Rural Economy

A rural Maryland county is getting a lifeline to build a more diverse economic future for its residents.

Worcester County commissioners accepted a $150,000 grant this week to study economic growth opportunities in the county's southern region. The funding comes from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and the Tri-County Council for the Lower Eastern Shore, which are splitting the cost equally.

The goal is simple but powerful: help residents access more types of jobs beyond the traditional agricultural and tourism work that dominates the area. County officials see huge potential in leveraging the region's proximity to Wallops Flight Facility, home to Navy, NASA, and NOAA operations.

"There's ample opportunity to have other aerospace and defense type industries in the southern part of the county," says Weston Young, the county's Chief Administrative Officer. The area already has success stories like Hardwire, an advanced materials company operating in the Pocomoke Industrial Park.

Local business owners are celebrating the news. Keith Hornberger runs a stained glass studio in Pocomoke City and has watched revitalization efforts gradually transform his town.

"We're on the right direction now," Hornberger says. "Adding this stuff onto it is just going to add fuel to the fire."

The Ripple Effect

This grant represents more than just a study. It's recognition that rural communities deserve investment in their economic futures, not just stopgap measures.

When areas diversify their job markets, families gain stability. Young people find reasons to stay instead of leaving for cities. Small towns like Snow Hill and Pocomoke City get resources to improve infrastructure and services.

The aerospace and defense sectors offer skilled, well-paying jobs that can support middle-class families. For a region that's watched manufacturing leave and struggled with seasonal tourism work, that kind of economic anchor could be transformative.

The next steps include finding the right consultant to conduct the economic study and identify specific opportunities. That research will guide how Worcester County attracts new industries while supporting existing businesses and residents.
